Overview

Discover Uganda

Winston Churchill called Uganda the Pearl of Africa and it is easy to understand why. A lush, green land of dramatic landscapes — from the misty Bwindi Impenetrable Forest to the thundering Murchison Falls on the Nile — Uganda offers some of Africa's most intimate wildlife encounters.

Uganda is home to over half the world's remaining mountain gorillas, making it one of the premier destinations for gorilla trekking. Alongside gorillas, visitors can track chimpanzees in Kibale Forest, spot tree-climbing lions in Queen Elizabeth National Park and cruise the source of the Nile.

Uganda is known as the "Pearl of Africa," celebrated for its lush landscapes, distinct equatorial climate, and unique positioning where East African savannahs meet West African rainforests. It is one of the world's most ecologically diverse destinations, famously serving as the sanctuary for over half of the planet's remaining wild mountain gorillas and the source of the Nile River.
Major Tourist Regions
  • The Western Rift Valley & Rainforests: A landscape of volcanic crater lakes, ancient primary rainforests, and Rwenzori glaciated peaks that host the highest concentration of primates on Earth.
  • The Savannah & River Basin: A region of rolling savannahs, sprawling wetlands, and rushing waterfalls carved out by the path of the Victoria Nile.
  • The Eastern & Central Highlands: An area of spectacular waterfalls, rugged peaks like Mount Elgon, and high-adrenaline water adventure hubs at the source of the Nile.

Top Attraction Parks and Regions
1. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (Western Rainforests)
  • Highlight: Mountain gorilla trekking encounters.
  • Description: A UNESCO World Heritage site, this ancient, mist-covered rainforest is Uganda's premier tourism drawcard. It provides critical sanctuary to roughly 400 mountain gorillas, allowing travelers to embark on guided treks into dense foliage to spend an unforgettable hour with habituated gorilla families.
2. Queen Elizabeth National Park (Western Savannahs)
  • Highlight: Unique tree-climbing lions and Kazinga Channel boat cruises.
  • Description: Uganda's most popular savannah park spans across the floor of the Rift Valley. In the remote Ishasha sector, lions have adapted a world-famous habit of sleeping high up in fig trees, while the park's Kazinga Channel hosts launch cruises packed with elephants, hippos, and thousands of waterbirds.
3. Murchison Falls National Park (Savannah & River Basin)
  • Highlight: The world's most powerful surge of water.
  • Description: Uganda's largest protected conservation area is split by the Victoria Nile. The absolute highlight is seeing the entire river force itself through a narrow 7-meter rocky gap, exploding into a thunderous waterfall that plunges 43 meters down before transitioning into a calm river teeming with crocodiles.
4. Kibale Forest National Park (Western Rainforests)
  • Highlight: Tracking wild chimpanzees in the Primate Capital.
  • Description: Containing one of the highest densities and diversities of primates on the African continent, Kibale is the premier destination for chimpanzee tracking. The lush canopy is home to over 1,500 habituated chimpanzees alongside 12 other distinct primate species like red colobus monkeys.
5. Jinja & The Source of the Nile (Eastern Highlands)
  • Highlight: World-class white-water rafting and adventure tourism.
  • Description: Located where the Nile River flows out of Lake Victoria, Jinja is the undisputed "Adventure Capital of East Africa." Thrill-seekers flock here for heavy Grade 5 white-water rafting, kayaking, bungee jumping, and sunset boat cruises directly out to the geographical source of the Nile.
6. Kidepo Valley National Park (The Arid Northern Frontier)
  • Highlight: Pristine, isolated wilderness and dramatic mountain vistas.
  • Description: Tucked into the remote northeastern corner bordering South Sudan, Kidepo is Uganda’s most isolated park, offering a completely untamed safari experience. The sweeping, golden savannah plains are ringed by rugged mountain ranges and host rare wildlife not found elsewhere in Uganda, like cheetahs and ostriches.
